Colour Theory
This week I learnt about colour theory and the ways in which colour can be used to change a look dramatically based on the hue, saturation and contrast of various colours. Colour is a means of visual expression for makeup artists which is why I think it is important that we are learning about colour so we can better define and design our looks.
Defining Colour Schemes:
Monochromatic - One colour i.e. Purple. However there is different shades within purple such as indigo, mauve and lilac and these make up a monochromatic scale.
Analogus - Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel and so match together nicely. i.e. Red, orange and yellow.
Complimentary colours - Contrasting colours that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel and compliment each other when placed next to each other. i.e. purple and green.
Achromatic and neutral Colours - Whites, Greys and Blacks. Foundations and concealers would come under this category when planning a makeup look.
After learning about colour theory I practiced using a face chart to produce a makeup look with colour. I used Analogous colours and neutral colours to create my look.
I really enjoyed creating the face from a white template and using shade and tone and using reds, burgundies and oranges. I used green for the eyes as a complimentary colour to bring our the eyeshadow. I really like how it turned out. After coming from an art background with experience in drawing faces and life drawing I found it quite easy to shade the face and graduate the colours to make a realistic look.
