Traditional Elizabethan Makeup.
In a lesson i missed due to a personal commitment we were told to create a traditional Elizabethan makeup look that we could use to inspire our work in the future as well as giving us technical skills for possible future projects where a period makeup look would be required. I found creating this look very enlightening and inspiring for my final designs.
Step 1: Apply a thick layer of white base with a large flat brush all over the skin. Covering eyebrows, eyelids and lips. Blend with a large kabuki brush.
Step 2: Add white mascara to eyelashes and white liner to the waterline. To reflect the contextual style of the Elizabethan era where women's eyebrows were plucked thin and could not be seen as well as no eyelashes or bleached out eyelashes. Shade the eye socket with a cool toned light grey to create shadow in the eyes to make the eyes look sunken into the face.
Step 3: Add a light pink or red blush to the apples of the cheeks to reintroduce colour into the face. Add a light pink/ red lip colour to create a thinner lip line, underline the lips. Again reflecting the Elizabethan traditional make as you would never see an Elizabethan woman of high status with full lips.
One issue I had was that my eyes have been really irritated from contact lenses recently and so I couldn't apply the white mascara without my eyes watering and stinging in pain. To overcome this issue I applied white base on my eyelashes however in future I will have to find a better alternative as this didn't work very well for a final look.
