Initial Designs.

Initial Inspired by my Lady in waiting.

This is my first makeup design inspired by my lady in waiting. I wanted her to have a morbid and stoney looking face. I have designed this look with no eyebrows and very dark blended out eye sockets all the way down to the crease while also running the dark eyeshadow down the nose.  I wanted to have white eyelashes in my design because i feel that it will draw attention to the sternness in the eyes and the personality of my character will then be portrayed well through the makeup. I chose a dark brown lip with a matte finish as i don't really want to use red as a colour in my work. I think that the shimmering bronzes and  brown will produce a more interesting look thats slightly more contemporary as well as matching in with the season A/W.  I wanted to have a strong contour in one of my designs as i feel that the harsh line with split up the paleness of the skin and also add dimension to the face. I am a little worried that this design could come off looking a little muddy on my skin so i will complete a trial over the course of this week in order to practice my look and see if i can change anything to make it better.

This is my second makeup look based on my lady in waiting. I wanted to create an even more contemporary feeling design and so changed this look completely. I want this designs skin to have a dewy finish that looks almost like a marble statue. The contour in this design is a greyish lilac to accentuate the eyes and lips and their colour. The contour is quite heavy but i don't want such a dead cut line on this design as i did on the above design. The lip colour i chose was one from my own collection; Rebel by Mac Cosmetics. I also used this on the eyes as a sort of eyeliner and i want to have white eyelashes again in this look. I want my design to have a bold matte lip but i think the eyes create a very visually interesting effect that has an heir of promiscuity and confidence which is one of the main characteristics i want my character to have. I was thinking about maybe adding in some gold or even a rose gold to emphasise the prestigious titles my character carries. I was thinking about trailing this look with and without the metallic colours to best decide what will look good on my look. Overall i think this is my favourite contemporary look.

This last look is probably my least favourite look out of my three designs. I like the idea of the no eyebrows and fake lashes but i think the design of this makeup is a bit scruffy and i could have done better. The bronzed theme continues in this design from thefts one however this time i added some plumb pink tones that i think work well as i have extended the eyeshadow for the eyes in order to for the blusher for this look as well. I chose a nude lipstick by Mac Cosmetics called 'Angel' as i think this really goes with the look. I wanted to have one design with a nude lip as i have noticed that neutral toned lips are very popular at the moment and that they would create a very contemporary look. I didn't want this look to be as pale as the last two looks and i think this works well. I was having a think about what bronze products i could use for this look at there is the golden colour in the Kryolan Supra colour palette but also the Illamasqua liquid metals palette could be a good choice of product. I like the idea of metals being part of the look as in many of Queen Elizabeths portraits she is pictured wearing precious stones and metals. I think that this would reflect well on the historical context of the colours i have chosen.

Peer Evaluation Notes after presentation.

After my presentation and pitch to the class based on my three initial makeup ideas i was told i had focused too much on a modern take on the looks and hadn't included enough historical references as well as symbolism.

Some of the notes i received from peers:
  • A lot of Great modern research. more reference to historical images.
  • Like the modern interpretation of bold eyebrows, like the bronzed sparkle look with the white eyelashes.
  • Don't Get too carried away with modern influences.
  • More References to Elizabethan symbolism based on your character.
  • Develop and do more designs using the successful aspects in the looks (use of deep purple)
  • Look at portraits for inspiration.
  • Link colours to personality traits in order to better portray the personality of your lady in waiting more effectively.

I think some of these Notes will definitely help me focus on what i need to do next in terms of developing my designs. I am now going to go and look back at the portrait i found of Lettice in order to better understand how she presented herself. After this i will take the advice of using certain colours to link to different personality traits and symbolism in order to portray the character i have created. The evaluation has definitely helped me to understand where i can change and develop my ideas more easily. It is interesting to see peoples opinions on your work in a constructive way as it helps you to improve and produce the best possible design you can from popular opinion. I now have a lot of new ideas for what i can create. I think i will keep the first design i made as i think that is my strongest design after listening to the feed back and it also contains the symbolism of bronze and gold which is symbolic of wealth as well as technical and historical reference with the white eyelashes and no eyebrows.
