Looking Back

Looking back:

1st Week of Uni

Starting a new chapter in life is always going to be challenging. firstly moving away from home and many of the things you love and then meeting hundreds of new people in the space of a week. The feeling of change is endless.
My first week of university has been filled with amazing experiences and opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to experience had I not come to university. Over this week I have listened and learnt a lot already, especially from the hygiene talk, as I have never had any experience with makeup, I am self taught and just had a need to gain knowledge on this subject in particular. So the hygiene talk was very important as it made me aware of the dangers of double dipping brushes and different skin diseases that a makeup artist will encounter in there career.

Later in the week I attended a lecture and work shop run by two makeup artists who helped to produce and create looks for Illamasqua as well as having there own careers in TV and Film makeup artistry. In the lecture I learnt a lot about the industry of makeup art and the variety of paths my future career could take. This has really inspired me to research more into the different types of makeup art there is as I am not entirely sure what career path I would want to take. i.e. special effects, fashion/ editorial or theatre and film. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop run by the Illamasqua girls as they demonstrated to the group two different looks from a recent catwalk show at fashion week. The colours were bold and daring which isn't something I would usually go for so this was very interesting for me as I would like to practice with different brush strokes and techniques as well as colour and line.

On Thursday I attended a workshop run by two makeup artists from Charles Fox/ Kryolan, who spoke about all the different typed of products in the range and explain the makeup kit we ordered to us. Through this demonstration I realised that not all products have to have only one use as lipstick was used as eyeshadow and glue was used to push the eyebrow hairs into place. This has helped me to realise that you can never stop learning new and creative techniques when producing makeup looks.

In reflection my first week of study has been very interesting and inspired me to experiment and practice with more colours and a variation of techniques while also remembering to keep the makeup clean and able to use repeatedly without spreading bacteria and germs. I also met some amazing people who share the same dreams in career path as I do and the course leaders themselves seem very down to earth and willing to help in any way they can to further your knowledge and experiences. I really enjoyed my first week.
